On
October 30, 2010 we are having the first annual
Spooky 10K & 5K Fun Run
at Pilot Peak Ghost Town, which is 10
miles west of West Wendover Nevada. Spooky (the wolfdog) will be
running the 10K. Runners (and walkers) are invited to bring their
four-legged exercise partners if they are friendly towards other
runners.
Then
on April 2, 2011 we will be holding the first Annual
Pilot Peak April Fool's Run For the Gold Marathon and Half Marathon,
which will start at Pilot Peak Ghost Town, go to West Wendover, and
end back at the ghost town. The ghost town elevation is 4750 ft.
West Wendover's elevation is 4375 feet. Runners are
encouraged to impersonate their favorite zoo animal.
All
events will be held on dirt roads as there is not any pavement
(except for I-80) around the ghost town. But dirt is better on the
knees anyway.
Proceeds from these event will go to the animals at Pilot Peak
Wildlife Park.
Very
nice hotel rooms are available at the 5 casinos in West Wendover,
but they don’t allow pets. Pets are allowed at two or three of the
motels in town. We are going to work on getting some casino
packages and discount rates at motels for participants.
If you
are flying and happen to have your own plane you can fly into
Wendover Airport, but for commercial flights Salt Lake City is the
closest airport. Due to the casino action and Salt Lake being 120
miles away, all our hotels in town fill up on the weekends so
registration will need to be made at least a couple months in
advance. When we get a website up for the events and registration
forms we'll post more info.
Come support the animals, run and be healthy, and explore the high
desert and what our piece of the West has to offer.

Wendover, Utah was the home of a World War II airbase, where the
Enola Gay was housed and the 509th composite group, the Black
Falcons, trained for their deadly mission to drop the A-bomb on
Japan. The bomb loading pits and the Enola Gay hangar are available
for viewing. The effort has just been begun to find the money to
restore the hangar to its former state.
